Building Information Modelling. The (r)evolution in the construction industry

An updated version of the ‘HZ-M/AZ’ (combined wall system) family for Revit 2019 is available.

The building industry is bound to adopt BIM as the new revolutionary way to improve the construction processes, its reliability and collaboration during all the design and execution phases. At the same time, it is expected to simplify the management, and later the dismantling or rehabilitation of the building. Every stakeholder involved in the design, execution and maintenance processes shall benefit from this new concept.

Many public authorities throughout the world, as well as major private investors, promote BIM, or even impose it in their tender documents. Some European authorities have gone a step ahead: BIM is compulsory in their projects.

The shift from conventional 2D design to BIM is a huge challenge, but after a first transition phase, the benefits are tangible: reduced design and execution time, better collaboration between the architects, engineers and contractors, less issues to be solved on the job-site, more relevant and reliable information transferred to the facility management, and so on. Overall, the total cost of a project should be reduced, even if it is only by a small percentage.

BIM is definitely much more than an innovative 3D design concept, and one key aspect is interoperability between different software (design and management).

Infrastructure is following the same path, and ArcelorMittal Sheet Piling is convinced that in a few years, all major projects involving steel sheet piles will be designed and managed in BIM.

Consequently, our technical department started the implementation of BIM. One of the first tasks was to choose a BIM compatible software. The choice was primarily based on our experience with several CAD software, but also feedback from our customers and sub-contractors. In a first phase, ArcelorMittal’s Sheet Piling technical department will develop BIM objects for Autodesk® Revit®software, and we strongly believe that our Revit families (files with the extension .rfa) will enhance the productivity of BIM modelers using Revit.

You can download free of charge the Revit families (version 2017) of the standard steel sheet piles AZ, AU, PU, GU, as well as the AS 500. Please read the short note included before using the .rfa files.

Update December 2020: The second version of our new Revit family ‘HZ-M/AZ(combined wall system) is now available. We added the new HZ 630M and adapted the shape of the HZ 1080M-A range and above (change in the radius).

Update November 2021: new version of the Revit family ‘HZ-M/AZ(combined wall system). The radius between the flange and the web of the HZ 880M range have changed. If you wish to test this new family in Autodesk Revit (version 2019 or above) models, download the .rfa file here. Being a more complex system, we recommend reading the short user manual before using the family.

Our technical department has been assisting customers with layout drawings in 2D from more than 20 years, and we will continue assisting our customers with their BIM models. This service is free of charge.

Finally, do not hesitate to contact us if you have any question about our BIM objects, or if you use a different BIM compatible software.
