Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) & Life Cycle Assessments (LCA)

ArcelorMittal published several Environmental Product Declarations (EPD), among others
  • EcoSheetPilePlus covers the range of products manufactured in Luxembourg through the electric arc furnace (EAF) route with 100% renewable electricity,
  • steel sheet piles (GU® type) covers the GU hot rolled steel sheet piles manufactured in our mill in Dabrowa (Poland),
  • cold formed steel sheet piles covers the full range of cold formed sheet piles manufactured in Messempré (France).
For specific countries, following EPDs  have been published recently
  • EcoSheetPile™ Plus, 2023, MRPI (Dutch programme operator), for the Dutch market, EN 15804+A2,
  • EcoSheetPile™ Plus, 2023, INIES (French programme operator), for the French market, EN 15804+A2.
  • EcoSheetPile™ Plus, 2023, B-EPD (Belgian programme operator), for the Belgian market, EN 15804+A2.
  • EcoSheetPile™ Plus, 2024, USA-EPD (USA programme operator), for the American market, EN 15804+A2.
EPD's are based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) according to ISO and European standards (ISO 14025, EN 15804). They were peer-reviewed, and provide data about environmental burdens due to the production of steel sheet piles, up to the gate (cradle to gate), as well as benefits from reuse and recycling of the material after its service life (cradle to gate + options).

For more details on EPDs and LCAs, go to our dedicated page (use link below) or contact us.

You will also find below Life Cycle Assessments comparing the environmental impact of different solutions for the execution of the retaining walls of two case studies
  • a quay wall of a cruise ships terminal,
  • an underground car park.
The LCAs were drafted by environmental experts from our R&D department, based on a design of the structure performed by an independent consulting engineering firm. In order to publish a comparative LCA, but also to be transparent, the LCAs were peer-reviewed by independent experts. Please note that there are some intrinsic limitations to any LCA comparison, mainly due to the assumptions that have to be made and due to specific or local parameters that can influence the results of case studies.

The latest brochure describes in a simple manner the differences between an LCA and an EPD. It contains sound recommendations to compare the environmental footprint of alternative solutions based on EPDs, and enumerates some misconceptions that we have come across recently.
