The impervious steel sheet pile wall

ArcelorMittal carried out an extensive research project in collaboration with Delft Geotechnics. The objective of the project was to determine the rate of seepage through the interlocks of steel sheet piles for various joint filler materials, as well as for empty and welded joints. This document summarizes the results to enable the designer to make a rational assessment of the seepage rate for a specific case. It contains also many details about design and practical aspects for each sealing system.

It considers several design assumptions, such as the influence of the ventilation of the modules, the spreading of the fire from one vehicle to adjacent vehicles, a 'natural' fire curve (in contrast to the quite unfavourable ISO fire curve), the protection of steel against the heat transfer, etc.

A cost-effective alternative to the standard anchoring system of AZ® sheet pile walls is the 'off-centre anchoring'. Advantage: no need to drill a hole through the interlock any more. The design method was validated by the German Institute DIBt, which issued a German National Technical Approval.
