Responsible Sourcing
Responsible Steel™ & BES 6001 (UK)
ArcelorMittal Belval and Differdange, along with other Luxembourg sites, are the first in the world to obtain the ResponsibleSteel™ certification, a global initiative that recognizes adherence to stringent social, environmental, and governance criteria. In addition to quality and health and safety standards, this certification covers climate change, water resources, biodiversity, human and workers' rights, and business integrity. In 2022, ArcelorMittal Poland also obtained the ResponsibleSteel™ certification.
ArcelorMittal Europe - Long Products has also been certified under the BRE Environmental & Sustainability Standard BES 6001, which demonstrates our commitment to sustainable sourcing. Our sustainability governance encompasses sustainable development, climate, and risk management, as well as transparent reporting and disclosure through regular updates and reports.
We believe that responsible behavior and sustainable development are key to creating long-term value for our stakeholders while maintaining a profitable market share.
Responsible Steel™
ArcelorMittal Belval and Differdange obtained the ResponsibleSteel™ certification on July 20th, 2021, a major recognition after several months of audits. The Luxembourg sites, including Rodange, with the ArcelorMittal sites in Belgium (Geel, Genk, Ghent and Liège) and Germany (Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt) are the first in the world to have been certified as meeting the requirements of ResponsibleSteel, the steel industry's first multi-stakeholder standardization and certification initiative globally.
Besides quality and Health and Safety criteria, the ResponsibleSteel certification encompasses stringent criteria covering a wide range of social, environmental and governance criteria, including:
- climate change and greenhouse gas emissions,
- the conservation of water resources and biodiversity,
- human and workers’ rights,
- relations with stakeholders and business integrity.
The certification is based on 12 principles subdivided in a series of requirements. The sites undergo a detailed audit conducted by a third-party organization and validated by an independent certification committee. ArcelorMittal called on the firms AFNOR and GUTcert which are specialized in assessment and certification services.
In 2022, ArcelorMittal Poland also obtained the ResponsibleSteel™ certification.

Governance
Organizations must go beyond mere compliance with regulations to foster a culture where integrity and ethical behavior are at the forefront. This includes respecting and responding to the concerns of colleagues and stakeholders. Our Code of Business Conduct outlines the behavior expected from our personnel and representatives.
Sustainable Development Governance
Integrating sustainable development (SD) into our business operations is crucial for long-term value creation. Our management and Board oversee this integration, supported by a Sustainability Committee that addresses key areas like health, safety, and environmental impact. Regular updates and reports ensure accountability and adherence to our sustainability goals.
Climate Governance
Our approach to climate change involves coordinated efforts across senior management levels, focusing on reducing CO2 impacts and aligning investments with our 2050 net zero CO2 goal. This strategic alignment is overseen by the Group Climate Change and Environment Committee.
Sustainable Development Risk Management
We actively manage risks related to environmental, social, and ethical goals through continuous assessment and strategic planning. This process helps us anticipate and mitigate potential impacts on our business and stakeholders.
Sustainable Development Reporting and Disclosure
Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in our annual Integrated Review and quarterly leadership updates. We provide transparent reporting on sustainability metrics and progress towards our goals, including detailed updates in our Climate Action report.
