Creating Sustainable Foundations for the BVK Munich's New Headquarters at RS76

On the former Siemens site at Richard-Strauss-Strasse 76 (RS76) in Munich, the new headquarters of the Bavarian Pension Fund (BVK) is being built. ZÜBLIN Spezialtiefbau has been commissioned to create the excavation pit, which is impressive in size and depth. 

A total of 188,300 m3 of soil will be excavated and disposed of. A temporary sheet pile wall was constructed on the south and east sides of the construction site. The contractor chose ArcelorMittal's PU profiles for the sheet pile wall, which have a very low CO2 footprint due to scrap-based production and the use of renewable energy during manufacturing. The overall project aims for a high level of sustainability and has already been awarded the "Sustainable Construction Site" certificate by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB).

The construction of the excavation pit for the new headquarters of the Bavarian Pension Fund in Munich faced the typical challenges of an inner-city location, including nearby residential and commercial buildings, special requirements for dust and noise emissions, and challenging logistics. 

To address the risk of vibrations or deformations from the nearby U4 subway tunnel, a monitoring system was installed. In January of this year, the first special deep foundation works began, and in March, the first PU 28 sheet piles for the sheet pile wall were delivered. The sheet piles were rented from ArcelorMittal and returned to the rental warehouse after temporary use. The sheet piles were installed using a vibratory method with an ABI TM 22, with a total tonnage of 798 t and a sheet pile wall area of 4,850 m2. Replacement drilling was carried out in the area of the planned infiltration trenches, and the existing soil was replaced with 8/32 grain size gravel.

The RS76 excavation pit was awarded the DGNB certification for sustainable construction sites. Since the "Special Deep Foundation" system was not yet available at the German Sustainable Building Council at that time, the certification was based on a similar criteria catalog for building construction. 

The temporary sheet pile wall is an essential part of the sustainability concept of the excavation pit. The rented sheet piles are typically reused between 5-10 times before being fully recycled at the end of their life cycle. The sheet piles used on the site are from the EcoSheetPile™ Plus series, made in Luxembourg from 100% recycled scrap and using 100% renewable energy. ArcelorMittal Träger und Spundwand GmbH began converting all sheet pile rental warehouses to EcoSheetPile™ Plus in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Using EcoSheetPile™ Plus sheet piles on the RS76 construction site saved approximately 1,652 t CO2 equivalents (CO2-eq.) in steel production (Modules A1-A3). This corresponds to an 85% reduction compared to conventionally produced sheet piles. 

Reusing the sheet piles in future construction projects has a further positive impact by avoiding the production of new steel, thus saving natural resources and energy (Module D). For the end-of-life scenario (Module D), a conservative assumption of five reuses of the sheet pile is made.
