Straight web sheet piles

AS 500®

Straight web steel sheet piles are designed to form cylindrical structures, retaining a soil backfill and/or water.

The stability of constructions built up like that, a steel envelope and an internal soil mass, is guaranteed by their own weight.

Straight web sheet piles are mostly used on projects where rock layers are quite shallow (close to excavation level), where the excavation depth is very high, or where anchoring would be difficult or even impossible, or in seismic regions.

Main applications are:

  • very deep cofferdams / dry-docks (temporary or permanent);
  • deep-sea quay walls;
  • breakwaters (maritime);
  • dolphins to protect bridge pillars.

Straight web sheet pile structures are executed as circular cells or diaphragm walls depending on the site characteristics or the particular requirements of the project.

Straight web sheet pile structures are executed as circular cells or diaphragm walls depending on the site characteristics or the particular requirements of the project.

The forces developing in these sheet pile sections are essentially horizontal tensile forces requiring an interlock resistance corresponding to the horizontal force in the web of the pile. AS 500 interlocks comply with EN10248, with interlock resistances Rk,s up to 6 000 kN/m. Note that both the resistance of the interlock and of the web need to be guaranteed. The safety factors applied to the web resistance and to the interlock resistance can be different.

All AS 500 straight web sections interlock with each other.

AS 500 Installation

Installation of AS 500 straight web sheet piles requires a specific procedure and templates.

Generally speaking:

  • installation of circular cells is possible on water and on land, and is simpler than the installation of diaphragm cells;
  • execution of diaphragm cells on water is quite complex.

AS 500 Cell geometries

Pause Play

The geometry of the structure is quite complex to determine. Below is an extract of the catalogue of basic geometries for the standard angle of 35° for AS 500 junction piles used for circular cells.

Please refer to our brochure “AS 500® Straight web steel sheet pile – design & execution manual” for further details.

Do not hesitate to contact us for optimizing the layout: if the dimensions of the a straight wall built with circular cells are a little bit flexible, then you might need only two different junction piles, which simplifies the task of the workers at the job-site.
