SmartSheetPile pilot project in Mertert, Luxembourg

On April 16, 2024, members of the ArcelorMittal Sheet Piling team from Esch sur Alzette took a field trip to the Luxport-Group's expansion project in Mertert, Luxembourg.

Port of Mertert in Luxembourg

The day began with an informative presentation by Dr. Ing. Abir Gallala, a business development manager at ArcelorMittal. Abir’s talk, titled Introducing SmartSheetPile: Advanced Structural Health Monitoring for Steel Sheet Piles, provided deep insights into the innovative technology designed to enhance infrastructure safety and sustainability.

Dr. Gallala elaborated on the transformative capabilities of SmartSheetPile, emphasizing its role in shifting from traditional products to holistic solutions and services that prioritize value creation and resilience. She highlighted the system’s ability to monitor, detect, and forecast/prevent damage under various conditions, secure structures from accidental and weather-induced damage, and provide early warnings to prevent catastrophic collapses. Her presentation stressed the importance of predictive maintenance that eliminates the need for costly inspections and unscheduled repairs, enhancing operational efficiency.

Following the enlightening presentation, the team observed the practical application of SmartSheetPile technology. They witnessed the precision in setting custom depths for SheetPiles using specialized vibration equipment, capable of installing and extracting 20-meter U-shaped SheetPiles to facilitate the port’s expansion. This not only allows for the efficient handling of infrastructure demands but also the potential reuse of materials, showcasing sustainable construction practices.

The trip also highlighted the first onsite use of the SmartSheetPile solution integrated with the XCarb® EcoSheetPilePlus, allowing real-time monitoring of retaining wall conditions over the coming years. This application represents a pivotal step in leveraging innovative monitoring technologies to ensure the long-term sustainability and safety of maritime infrastructure.

The visit proved to be a practical demonstration of how SmartSheetPile technology can be applied in real-world settings, making it an invaluable experience for the team. The insights gained from Dr. Gallala's presentation and the subsequent live demonstration underscored the significant advancements ArcelorMittal is making in the field of sustainable and intelligent infrastructure solutions.
