Sabbioncello Canal, Quingentole, IT | 2025

The Sabbioncello Canal is a key irrigation canal in the Ferrara plain, supplying water to a large agricultural area in northern Italy. Over time, significant water losses through seepage and infiltration reduced the canal's efficiency, creating the need for a durable rehabilitation solution to preserve water resources and improve irrigation reliability.

To address the problem of water leakage, a continuous impermeable barrier was installed along the canal using 4,450 tonnes of GU 7S steel sheet piles. The sheet pile wall reduces seepage through the embankment, limits water losses, and improves the overall hydraulic performance of the canal. In addition to enhancing water retention, the steel sheet piles help stabilize the canal banks and provide a long-lasting solution capable of withstanding varying hydraulic and environmental conditions.

The rehabilitation of the canal is expected to save approximately 6 million m³ of water annually, significantly improving irrigation efficiency and water management. The project strengthens the resilience of the agricultural water supply network while supporting more sustainable use of water resources in the region.
