Soil decontamination Annecy | France | 2024

An international manufacturer of metal packaging for the cosmetics industry has decontaminated its former industrial site prior to its sale. In the French Alps, in the town of Annecy, a decontamination project is being carried out using a low-carbon approach, thanks to the temporary use of metal sheet piles. In soil decontamination projects, the soil is often excavated and transported to another site for treatment. In this case, the client opted for an alternative that avoids moving the soil for decontamination.

In order to ensure efficient operation and prevent any impact of the thermal treatment (caused by circulation) on the groundwater, the treatment area was surrounded by a curtain of watertight sheet piles.

DFC Battage installed 183 pairs of GU 13N non-interlocking sheet piles, each 7 metres long. A total of 220 metres were installed using a 55-tonne crawler crane equipped with a lattice boom. To avoid vibrations that could damage neighbouring buildings, a variable high-frequency vibratory pile driver was used, specifically a PTC 23HFV.

The top layer of soil was generally composed of brown/grey clay fill, followed by a layer of grey clay sand. For this particular project, the in situ thermal desorption method was used to remove a chemical solvent (trichloroethylene) from the soil.
