In order to ensure efficient operation and prevent any impact of the thermal treatment (caused by circulation) on the groundwater, the treatment area was surrounded by a curtain of watertight sheet piles.
DFC Battage installed 183 pairs of GU 13N non-interlocking sheet piles, each 7 metres long. A total of 220 metres were installed using a 55-tonne crawler crane equipped with a lattice boom. To avoid vibrations that could damage neighbouring buildings, a variable high-frequency vibratory pile driver was used, specifically a PTC 23HFV.

The top layer of soil was generally composed of brown/grey clay fill, followed by a layer of grey clay sand. For this particular project, the in situ thermal desorption method was used to remove a chemical solvent (trichloroethylene) from the soil.
