The modernisation of Giurgiu port | 2025

Located on the Danube River in Romania, the Port of Giurgiu is a major hub for regional and international trade. As part of the Pan-European transport corridors, it provides an important link between the Black Sea, the Mediterranean, and Central Europe.

Project Scope

The ambitious project, scheduled for completion by mid-2025, introduces several new berths. To increase capacity and modernize the port, new berths and quay walls were constructed, creating 15,000 m² of additional port area.

Structural solutions

For both quay walls, the HZ®-M/AZ® combined wall system with secondary anchoring sheet pile walls was selected to optimize construction efficiency and structural performance. The solution reduced structural complexity through T-connections, facilitated the installation of tie rods, and provided the high load-bearing capacity required to support crane rail operations. To ensure quality and verify installation parameters, PDA tests were performed on the HZ-M king piles, providing real-time data on pile behaviour and driving performance.

Benefits of the Project

The project increases cargo handling capacity, improves operational efficiency, and strengthens connectivity along key European transport routes.

The durable steel sheet pile solution also ensures long-term performance and reliability for strategic port infrastructure. Construction works began
in early 2024. Thanks to the rapid installation of the steel sheet piles quay walls, the project was completed on time and commissioned in the mid-2025.
