The modernisation of Giurgiu port, RO | 2025
Enhancing capacity of a vital trade hub on the Danube River
This case study details a significant modernization project at the Port of Giurgiu in Romania, aimed at enhancing its capacity as a vital trade hub on the Danube River. Managed by general contractor PORR Construct SRL, the initiative involves constructing new berths and expanding the port area by 15,000 square meters to improve cargo handling and multimodal logistics. The technical core of the project utilizes an HZ-M/AZ steel wall system, which provides the structural strength necessary for heavy crane operations and seismic resilience. Over 3,000 tons of steel sheet piles were installed using specialized floating platforms and impact hammers to ensure precise alignment and durability. Completed by mid-2025, the upgrades focus on long-term efficiency and structural integrity through advanced engineering and testing methods. This transformation reinforces the port's strategic position within the Pan-European transport corridors connecting Central Europe and the Mediterranean.
