Water transport solutions

Quay walls, Breakwaters, Jetties, Dolphines, Groynes, Inland Harbours, Locks, Dikes, Atypical apllications

Water-based transport is essential to the global economy. Maritime and fluvial transport require a safe and reliable infrastructure network.

For over a hundred years, steel sheet piling products have been chosen to build all types of maritime infrastructure, such as breakwaters, quay walls, jetties, canals, and locks. Steel sheet piling solutions are cost-effective, quick to execute, and durable, with low maintenance requirements throughout their service life.

ArcelorMittal’s engineering and R&D teams continuously enhance our products and services. We collaborate with research institutions and consultants to develop design software like AMRetain® and Durability, as well as new construction methodologies.

The HZ®-M combined wall and AS 500® cellular systems are ideal solutions for deep-water port construction and land reclamation. These systems reduce the total lifetime cost of the project.

Steel sheet piles are 100% recyclable and a highly sustainable solution. Specific European Environmental Product Declarations are available for ArcelorMittal Sheet Piling’s product range.

Maritime infrastructures

ArcelorMittal’s hot rolled steel sheet pile sections have been used to build maritime infrastructures for over a hundred years. Through innovation and continuous improvement, combined walls such as the HZ®-M systems, AZ and U-type sections, or AS 500 flat sheet piles form one of the most advanced solutions for constructing or deepening port and other maritime structures.

Based on long-term experience, steel structures in a marine environment can be designed for a service life of 50years and more. Besides, ArcelorMittal developed a special steel grade that is more resistant to corrosion in seawater: AMLoCor®.

Inland waterways infrastructures

Rivers are used for shipping large quantities of bulk material and other special goods in an environmentally-friendly way. Navigation in rivers requires a minimum draft and a specific channel width. River transport is the best alternative to railway and road transport, more environmentally-friendly and usually cheaper.

Canals are man-made structures that are built specifically for navigation use, either for leisure boats or for large vessels / barges. Canals usually connect rivers, but sometimes they by-pass rivers. Canals have a specific gauge which determines the maximum size of the vessels allowed on the canal.
