Modernising irrigation infrastructure for the Ferrara plain

The Sabbioncello Canal is a vital water resource in Italy's Ferrara plain, drawing from the Po River to sustain extensive local agriculture and a variety of crops. To combat significant hydraulic losses exacerbated by climate change, the Consorzio della Bonifica Burana initiated a major modernization project using ArcelorMittal GU7S sheet piles. This engineering solution involves driving metal diaphragms into the embankments to block infiltration and stabilize the structure against erosion and wildlife damage. By implementing these waterproofing measures, the project aims to save approximately 6 million cubic meters of water every year. These sources collectively illustrate the transition toward a more sustainable and resilient irrigation system through the integration of industrial technology and environmental management.

Hydraulic savings resulting from the intervention are estimated to be up to 6 million cubic meters per year. These savings benefit the numerous types of crops of the region very demanding in water, such as apple, pear, corn, alfalfa, watermelon, and others.
