Global Warming Potential of only 370 kg CO2-eq by tonne of sheet pile produced (A1-A3).

The Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for ArcelorMittal’s EcoSheetPile™ Plus range is now available, with the unprecedented Global Warming Potential (A1-A3) of 370 kg CO2-eq per tonne of steel sheet piles produced.

For reference, the Worldsteel association indicates in their 2021 position paper on climate that “In 2020, on average, every tonne of steel produced led to the emission of 1.85 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.”

The EcoSheetPile™ Plus range is produced at the ArcelorMittal sites of Differdange and Esch-Belval in Luxembourg from ca. 100% scrap through an electric arc furnace route with guaranteed 100% renewable electricity supply. Part of the ArcelorMittal’s XCarb™ Recycled and renewably produced brand, this range is one of the steps towards our goal for carbon neutrality by 2050. The EcoSheetPile™ Plus products are 100% reusable and recyclable. They are available as Z-shaped, U-shaped, straight-web, and H-shaped.

This new EPD is based on a dedicated ‘Cradle-to-Gate with options’ life-cycle analysis, considering modules A1-A3, C3, C4 and D (more details about this in the document). It was verified by an independent reviewer according to ISO 14025 and EN 15804 standards and published by the German Institut Bauen und Umwelt e.V. (IBU) official program holder.
The life-cycle assessment took the following assumptions regarding the end-of-life of the EcoSheetPile™ Plus products: reuse of 25% of sheet piles, recycling of 60% and landfilling of 15%.

As it becomes essential for project owners to integrate green credentials assessment rules in their tendering processes, bids with a reduced carbon footprint have a tangible advantage over less environmentally friendly solutions. Together with the selection of the EcoSheetPile™ Plus range, fully optimised package solutions, relying on our high performance, tailor-made sheet pile sections, in combination with our high strength steel grades, allow further carbon footprint reductions and the design of winning steel solutions with the lowest environmental impacts.
